The Camden Bulldogs Varsity Baseball Team “bombed” the Bobcats from Seneca Tuesday night by a score of 12-2.
Thomas Bishop had a Grand Slam and a 3 Run Home Run to lead the Bulldogs to victory. Mac Mellichamp earned the win on the mound with 5 innings pitched allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits, 4 walks and 1 strikeout. The win allows the Dogs to advance to the District C Championship to be hosted in Camden on Saturday.
The Dogs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bishop reached by an error on a rocket to 3B. He would promptly steal second and reach third on a 1 out groundout off the bat of Maddux Dixon. Mellichamp drove him in with a 2 out base hit to center. Seneca evened the score in the bottom of the second inning at 1. In the top of the fourth inning Clay Ridgeway reached on an error and Thorn Tucker was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Hunter Zabransky sacrifice bunted the 2 runners into scoring position. Cason Newman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Bishop followed with a bullet over the fence down the left field line for a grand slam to make it 5-1 in the top of the 4th inning. In the top of the 5th inning the Dogs blew the game open. Mellichamp led off with a single and was replaced by pinch runner Maddox Freeman who promptly stole second and third. Dalton Sharpe laced a single to left field to drive in Freeman. Dustin Bixby was the courtesy runner for Sharpe. Bixby advanced to third base on a hit and run single to second base from Ridgeway to put runners at the corners. Thorn Tucker followed with a 3 Run Homer to left field to make it 9-1. Edwards Graham walked and Newman reached on an error leading up to Bishop’s second blast of the night. This time it was a 3 Run Homer to make it 12-1.
Seneca scored one in the bottom of the fifth to make the final 12-2. Camden had 8 hits on the evening with Bishop and Mellichamp each collecting 2. Sharpe, Ridgeway, Tucker and Newman all had 1 hit.
Camden now is in the driver’s seat to advance in the playoffs. They will play at home on Saturday vs. the winner from Thursday night’s contest between Seneca and York. The game time for Saturday has not been set yet but should be either 12:00 or 1:00. Should Camden win, they will be the District C Champions and will begin the best 2 out of 3 series vs. the District D Champions next Wednesday.
A loss on Saturday would create a final game for the district to take place on Monday to be located at the higher seed’s home site.
