Brady White had a walk-off drive passed a diving center fielder in the right-center field gap in the bottom of the 7th inning with two outs and the bases loaded. The game winning hit gave the Varsity Baseball team an 8-7 victory over Hartsville on Senior Night Wednesday night at Legion Field. Sam Ferguson earned his fourth victory on the mound with 3 and 1/3 innings of relief. He had 4 strikeouts and gave up three runs; however, all three runs were unearned. Holden Bunch started at pitcher and went 3 and 2/3 innings allowing 4 runs – 2 earned.
Hartsville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Bulldogs then scored 4 in the bottom of the second. Tate Abbott had a one out double to deep right field. Zane Cook reached on a single to left. Jacob Jordan drove in Abbott to tie the score at 1 a piece with a single to left. Bryce Jeffcoat laced a single to left field to load the bases. Cook and Jordan scored on an error off of Brady White’s grounder. Robert Spring replaced White as the courtesy runner and got his second stolen base of the game just as Jeffcoat scored on a wild pitch. Hartsville then scored a run in the third, two runs in the fourth, and two more runs in the fifth to take a 6 – 4 lead. Camden responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead. McKenzie Barrineau opened up the inning with an infield single up the middle. Bennett Caldwell followed with his second hit of the night down the third base line. Caldwell was replaced by pinch runner Matthew Cassidy. Tyler Maxwell followed with a walk to load the bases. Abbott drove in two runs with a one out double to the left center gap and tie the score at 6. Sam Ferguson followed with a single to left center and drove in Cassidy to go up 7-6. In the 6th inning Hartsville scored another run to tie the game at 7. In the bottom of the 7th Jake Tanner led off with a line drive base hit to left. Tate Abbott sacrifice bunted him to second base. Ferguson had a walk and was replaced by courtesy runner Shelah Lee. Jordan walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, White drove a ball deep to the gap in right center on a 2-2 count. White started out the at bat down in the count 0-2.
The victory was the 6th in a row for the Dogs and improves their record to 13-8. The next game played will be Thursday, April 11th in a game added at Fairfield Central due to the cancellation of a game earlier in the week. Tate Abbott will be the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs in their last regular season game of the season prior to the spring break tournament.
