Boys Varsity Baseball · Bulldogs With Walk-off Win over Volunteers

Tyler Maxwell had a one out RBI line drive in the bottom of the 10th inning in a late night walk-off win over the visiting Andrew Jackson Volunteers on Monday night at Camden’s American Legion Field.  The pitcher’s duel finally came to an end after 3 hours of baseball and 9 and a half innings played.  Owen Newman earned the victory on the mound for the Bulldogs with 3 and 2/3 innings pitched in relief of starter Bennett Caldwell.  Newman earned his first varsity victory by allowing only 2 hits and a walk along with one strikeout.  Caldwell was sensational in his first start of the season.  He pitched 6 and 1/3 innings, allowed 4 hits, had 5 strikeouts and 2 walks.  Caldwell had first pitch strikes against 19 of the 24 batters he faced.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the third inning.  Jake Tanner led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a errant pick off attempt, then made it to third on a wild pitch.  With one out Tanner was thrown out at the plate on an infield ground ball off of the bat by Bryce Jeffcoat.  Jeffcoat stole 2B and 3B and eventually scored on an RBI single from Tate Abbott.  The Volunteers answered with a run of their own in the 5th with a 2-out RBI single to tie the game.  It stayed that way until Maxwell’s heroics in the bottom of the 10th.  Jeffcoat led off the inning by lacing a double down the left field line.  Barrineau walked and was replaced by pinch runner Matthew Cassidy.  With one out Maxwell lined a ball into the left-center field gap to send the Dogs home victoriously.

Jake Tanner led the Bulldogs offense with 2 hits.  Abbott, Maxwell, and Jeffcoat were the other players to have single hits on the night.  Jeffcoat scored both Bulldog runs.  The Dogs are now 4 and 3 overall and have won three straight.  Next up is another conference game against Fairfield-Central  in Winnsboro.  Tate Abbott is scheduled to pitch for the Dogs.
