The Varsity Baseball team defeated visiting Clinton 5-0 on Tuesday night in the opening round of the District IV AAA State Playoffs at American Legion Field. The Bulldog bats were working early and often in the first 3 innings; however, after the Red Devils made a pitching change in the bottom of the third inning the hit parade came to an end. Nick Butler started off the bottom of the first inning with a booming double to left center field on the first pitch he saw. Lindsay Pierce then moved him over to third with a ground ball to second. Devin Beckley followed with a swinging bunt to the third baseman to put runners at 1st and 3rd. William Cobb had an RBI ground ball to the 3B. Tyler Maxwell followed with a 2 out-2 strike RBI single to left to drive in Ryland Ayers who was running the bases for Beckley. In the 3rd inning, Cobb worked at 2-out and nobody on walk. Maxwell then crushed a ball down the left field line just short of the 340 foot sign for a double to drive in Cobb. Gus Allen followed that with a walk. Brady White then drove in Maxwell with a base hit to left. Behind White, John Bailey drove in run #5 with Allen and a single to center field. The Bulldogs pieced together 5 runs on 7 hits. Maxwell led the attack with 2 hits and 2 RBI’s. There were no more multiple hitters; however, the following players had 1 hit each: Butler, Beckley, White, Bailey and Campbell Jordan.
On the mound for the Bulldogs Beckley pitched 6 innings and allowed 0 runs, struck out 9, walked 4 and gave up just 3 hits. Mikael Nelson came on for Beckley in the 7th inning at pitcher and allowed 1 hit and struck out 1. The Bulldogs face Powedersville on Thursday night at home at 6:30. Holden Bunch will be the starting pitcher for the Dogs.
