The varsity baseball team dropped yet another game to rival L-E on Wednesday-Day 3 of the K-R C spring break tournament at American Legion Field. The third meeting of the season between the two schools ended in a 1-0 defeat for the Bulldogs as Devin Beckley for Camden and Chase Roberts for L-E squared off in a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel. The loss sent the Bulldogs to Thursday’s cross-bracket game against Dreher for third place in the 4-day tournament.
Camden only had two real scoring opportunities in the game. The first opportunity came in the bottom of the first inning. Beckley got a two-out single up the middle and stole second base. William Cobb got a base hit to left field; however, Beckley was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning. L-E scored their lone run in the top of the 6th inning with a two-out single to left field to drive in a runner. In the bottom of the 7th inning Beckley and Cobb were once again in the thick of things as Beckley reached via a 1-out walk. He then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ryland Ayers replaced Beckley as a courtesy runner. William Cobb then lined a ball to center field that nearly went over the center fielder’s head but instead was caught. The next batter grounded out to first base to end the game.
Beckley, a Citadel signee, was very impressive. He went 7 innings with one run, 8 strikeouts, 4 hits and just 1 walk. Roberts, who has committed to Clemson, was almost identical. He had 7 innings pitched with 9 strikeouts and 2 hits allowed. The loss dropped the Dogs to 9-10 overall.
In other action, the North Central Knights defeated Richland Northeast 3-2. In JV action L-E defeated the Camden JV 6-2 and Chapin’s JV defeated Dreher’s JV 1-0.
