The Varsity Baseball team got back on track offensively against visiting Chapin; however, it was not enough to overcome 6 errors on defense as they dropped another non-conference game 9-4. Mikael Nelson got the start on the mound for the Bulldogs and allowed 6 runs in three innings of work. Five of the 6 runs were earned. He gave way to Holden Bunch in the top of the fourth inning. Bunch pitched 4 innings and allowed 3 runs with 2 of those being earned. Bunch had 3 strikeouts and 2 walks and gave up 5 hits.
Offensively, the Bulldogs broke out of an offensive slump with 8 hits on the night. Nick Butler led the way with two singles. Chapin scored a run with a lead off home run in the top of the second inning. Camden answered right back with a run of their own as Tyler Maxwell led off the inning with a single and went to second on an errant pickoff attempt. He later scored on a two-out single off of the bat of Brady White. The visiting Eagles broke the 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning and then broke it open with 5 runs in the top of the fourth. Camden scored three in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-4 before Chapin tacked on a run in the sixth to equal the final score of 9-4. In the bottom of the fifth inning Nick Butler started the rally with a one-out single. Lindsay Pierce was hit by a pitch. Devin Beckley followed with an RBI double to score Butler and put runners on second and third. William Cobb followed with an RBI infield single in the hole at short. Tyler Maxwell followed with a long sacrifice fly down the left field line to score Beckley. The Dogs got 8 hits on the night. Coming off of back to back shutouts the hits were welcomed. Butler had two hits and Beckley, Cobb, Maxwell, Campbell Jordan, White and John Bailey all had one hit each.
The Dogs are now 5 and 9 overall. The next contest is Friday night at home against Fairfield Central at 6:30. Devin Beckley is scheduled to start for the home game. These former players will be recognized on the field before the game and Beaufort Stew will be provided for them as well.
